Class Grading Outline and Student Contract for Social and Environmental Activism Unit

Welcome to 7/8 History!  I love teaching this subject and hope to instill a love for it in you, too!

Here's how the class works:

25% Grade - Class Points:  3 points can be earned each day in class.  1 point for punctuality - being in your seat at 9:15 a.m.  1 point for being prepared - having a pencil, paper, and your homework with you. 1 point for participating - speaking up, asking questions, positive attitude, alert and attentive, and participating with peers.  Points will be assessed daily.  Teacher's initials are required for points to be valid.

75 % Grade - Class Assignments:  Units will be outlined with possible points to be earned, and lots of extra credit ideas will also be given.  Assignments must be handed in at 9:15 a.m. sharp to be awarded full points.  Late assignments will be docked by one grade for every day late.  If a student is absent or ill, only a parent letter will merit more time.  Generally, one day's absent will cause the deadline to be extended one day.

Extra Credit - Multiple Intelligence Activities: These are for the taking!  Students may complete as many or as few as they desire.  Honest time and effort must be given to these and a quality product is expected.

free-choice Extra-credit multiple intelligences projects (10 pts each):

Visual/spatial	Create a poster, picket sign, or other paraphernalia for a current issue important to you. create a collage poster of important activists to motivates others to become involved.
kinesthetic/body	using the medium of dance or drama, present a piece interpreting activism. make a sports display showing how activists changed the sports world.
musical/rhythm	choose an issue important to you and write lyrics and record your own activist song. make a compilation of at least ten songs that have been used for activism.
math/logic	create a simple game to teach others about activists and/or social and environmental events.. make a graph showing how numbers affect change.
verbal/linguistic	read one Dr. Seuss books and connect it to forms of activism in an essay or written work. watch a movie about activism and write a short story about a part of it or how the activist achieves his/her goal.
science/nature	create and display a model or diorama of a famous protest or disaster.  Label it and give it a title.  Include a short description. locate on a map places that have been impacted by environmental issues.  Label them and give a description.
interpersonal	interview someone from a minority culture about economic and social acceptance difficulties.  Make a movie clip, poster, or essay about it. interview an activist.  find out the issue, people affected, and the means of bringing awareness to the issue.
intrapersonal	research a modern event and write three journal entries from the perspective of an activist. keep a journal of your own. record how what you are learning about activism is changing you.  also record some things you would like to change in the world, and why.
