Teacher Notes to Brainstorm Lesson
Most important concept: Cesar Chavez was a peaceful Latino activist who changed life for the migrant farmers in California.
Materials: Grapes, pictures of slums, mansions, fashionable, dirty, gluttonous, hungry. cardboard circle for the circle of poverty
Ask: Why are you attending Arches? (To go to university, etc.) Why get a good education? Why not just go to work after high school or drop out of high school? Who does your education impact in the future. Draw a cause and effect pattern on the board. Brainstorm all the ways a good education helps. (Pull economic advantages into the picture)
Pay scale of drop out vs. high school vs. college vs. masters vs. dr.
How can your parents improve their wages? (Training, school, skills) This takes time. Do you know anyone who went back to school as an adult? Why would they?
Ask students what the most difficult job would be to do. What jobs get paid the least. Map their responses.Draw a cause and effect pattern on the board. Brainstorm all the ways a poor education limits people. (Pull economic disadvantages into the picture).
Put up bike wheel (circle of poverty). How can we break out of the circle of poverty.. Have kids give examples.
Students act out Cesar Chavez story
Vocabulary: manual labor, strike, farmer, seasonal, Mahatma Ghandi, MLK, minimum wage
Read a Dr. Seuss book to the class that shows activism.
Video about Cesar Chavez. (Important to show this to the students)
Very important (52 minutes). Maybe show a few segments.

Farm worker in Florida
Sports wear
Poverty
Walmart
Invite them to befriend someone of another race. They should write about it in their response journals.
