Vietnam Music Comparison Paper (due Wednesday, 8 January 2014)

  1. Choose two songs from the list. Listen to them on youtube.com. It helps to look up the lyrics and think about the message of the song.  You might want to read about why and how the music and lyrics were formed.  Ask your parents for insights.
  2. Type an essay discussing three themes from the songs. Make sure you put the name of the song in quotation marks.  Remember to use complete sentences and indent paragraphs.
  3. Make the essay long enough to cover the subject and short enough to be interesting.

Paragraph One
State your topic, an original thought about the topic and music, the music and bands used,  and the three ideas you will discuss in the essay (Analytical Thesis Statement).

Paragraphs Two, Three, Four
Start with a strong lead sentence containing one of the main ideas.  Back up your lead sentence with many supporting sentences.  They should contain specific examples and original thoughts.

Paragraph Five
Restate the three ideas in a different way.  Summarize the whole essay by making a general conclusion.  Finish with an original thought.

Possible themes to choose from:

  • message/story (simple, complex?)
  • lyrics (insightful? meaningless?)
  • melody (repetitive, national,
  • sound effects
  • beat, rhythm (syncopated? heavy?)
  • types of instruments, voices (reflective, quiet, disturbing?)
  • emotional appeal (stirring? consoling?)
  • my opinion about the songs
  • other
